After a succession of wins, Arsenal were hoping to start the year by continuing their winning form at Southampton, where the hosts have only won two of the previous ten meetings.
The match kicked off with both sides playing a good game of balanced football, stringing passes and maintaining possession. Arsenal conceded a goal after losing the ball and giving Southampton a chance, which was converted by Ramirez who blasted from 16 yards out.
Only minutes after, Arsenal pulled one back after Walcott found a chance from a free-kick which was inadvertently volleyed and resulted in an own goal from the home side.
Arsenal managed to endure the second chance with a handful of chances while Southampton felt the strain of not being able to finish.
